The Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class Shows What to Expect from Future Entry-Level Models

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the Concept CLA Class, a vision that will greatly influence its next generation of entry-level vehicles, which will be more technological, more distinctive, and more sustainable than ever before.

Technologies that improve safety and convenience

Mercedes-Benz has always been a leader in automotive safety, and its next generation of electric models will be no exception. Indeed, new technologies will be put to good use in order to reduce the risk of accidents and improve the safety of everyone on board. One of the ways to do so is the addition of a Lidar sensor to the Level 2 semi-autonomous driver assistance system in order to further its capabilities and enhance its safety. This change also makes it so that the next CLA and its platform mates will be ready for a more advanced Level 3 system when such a technology becomes available in the coming years. Another innovation is the Child Presence Detection system, a feature that uses a network of 20 sensors to detect the presence of an infant via their breathing pattern in order to prevent tragic cases where a child has been forgotten in a hot car. In addition to alerting the driver via phone notifications, this system can also turn on the cabin’s climate control, sound an alarm to attract bystanders, and call the emergency services.

A new design philosophy

The Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class showcases a new styling direction for the brand by incorporating new technologies such as low-energy LED accents with the CLA’s traditional coupe-like shape. Most striking are the front and rear star-shaped projector lamps that recall the brand’s famous logo, which is also illuminated at both ends of the car. In addition, LED accent strips run across the entire front and rear of the vehicle from the middle of the front and rear doors. Lighting plays a key part in the design of the cabin as well, with accents shining on the panoramic roof and on the hidden climate control air registers that are placed behind the new one-piece glass dashboard. The cabin also adopts a very modern and airy appearance due to the present of metallic trim and white leather.

40% fewer value chain CO2 emissions

Mercedes-Benz is hard at work to reach its target of carbon neutrality along the value chain by 2039, and the Concept CLA Class shows how the new MMA platform will be a large step in this direction. Indeed, this new vehicle architecture promises a 40% reduction in overall CO2 emissions due to the use of more sustainable materials and production processes for batteries and motors. In addition, the concept features recycled paper, bamboo, and vegan silk as construction materials for various trim pieces around the cabin.
