Everything You Need to Know About the 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS
April 21 2026,
Mercedes-Benz built its reputation on pushing boundaries. The 2027 EQS rewrites the rulebook - with 800-volt architecture, steer-by-wire technology, and a 925-km range (WLTP) that makes range anxiety obsolete.
More than a quarter of the vehicle's components are new or refined. The battery is larger, the motors are more efficient, and the operating system is powered by artificial intelligence. If you're considering an electric luxury sedan in Quebec, this is the benchmark.
A New Electric Architecture Built for Long Distances
The 2027 EQS introduces 800-volt technology across the lineup, enabling DC fast charging up to 350 kW - enough to add 320 km of range in 10 minutes.
Battery capacity increases to 122 kWh across all trims. The cells use silicon oxide blended with graphite in the anodes, storing more energy per kilogram than previous designs. The result is more range without adding weight.
The EQS 450+ achieves a WLTP-rated range of 925 km - the longest of any Mercedes-Benz EV to date. That covers Montreal to Quebec City and back with range to spare. The EQS 500 4MATIC and EQS 580 4MATIC also use the 122 kWh battery, though their all-wheel-drive configurations adjust range slightly.
Recuperation power increases to 385 kW, up by a third over the previous generation. The EQS can slow down almost entirely through regenerative braking, returning energy to the battery instead of wearing brake pads.
Two-Speed Transmission and New Electric Drive Units
The rear axle now uses a two-speed transmission - a first for the EQS. First gear delivers rapid acceleration from a standstill. Second gear is designed for highway cruising, where efficiency and range matter most. The electronically limited top speed of 209 km/h is reached in second gear.
The electric drive units are new - more compact, efficient, and robust. On 4MATIC models, the front EDU acts as a boost motor with an integrated disconnect unit that activates instantly when extra power is needed.
The EQS 450+ produces 355 hp and drives the rear wheels only. The EQS 500 4MATIC and EQS 580 4MATIC add a front motor for all-wheel drive.
Steer-by-Wire: A First for a German Production Car
The 2027 EQS is the first series production car from a German automaker to offer steer-by-wire technology. There is no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels. Instead, sensors and control units translate steering input into precise wheel movements.
The system eliminates vibrations from uneven roads. The steering ratio adjusts automatically based on speed - tighter at low speeds for parking, more stable at highway speeds. Rear-axle steering works in tandem, with rear wheels steering parallel to the front wheels at higher speeds to improve stability.
The steering wheel is flatter, opening up more space and improving the view of the digital instrument cluster. The system uses redundant architecture with two signal paths to ensure steering capability is always maintained.
Steer-by-wire is optional. The standard setup uses electromechanical steering with a new steering wheel featuring roller and rocker controls.
MB.OS: The Operating System That Learns
The Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) replaces the previous MBUX platform. Built on a supercomputer using artificial intelligence, it connects to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud and integrates every aspect of the vehicle - powertrain, suspension, climate, infotainment, and driver assistance.
The MBUX Virtual Assistant can conduct complex dialogues, understands context, remembers preferences, and adapts to how you use the vehicle.
Over-the-air updates keep the EQS current without requiring a dealership visit. The Mercedes-Benz Store offers Digital Extras that let you customise the vehicle after purchase.
The MBUX Hyperscreen remains standard - three digital displays merge beneath a single continuous glass surface spanning over 55 inches.
AIRMATIC Suspension with Cloud-Based Damper Regulation
The AIRMATIC air suspension now uses cloud-based damper regulation. The system automatically adjusts damping before the vehicle reaches a speed bump, using GPS data and real-time road information. The result is a ride that glides over imperfections without feeling floaty in corners.
The suspension is self-levelling and can adjust ride height for different driving modes - lower for sport, higher for rough roads.
Advanced Driver Assistance with 27 Sensors
The 2027 EQS uses 10 external cameras, up to five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. These feed data to a high-performance control unit running on MB.OS. Artificial intelligence algorithms trained on fleet data process the sensor information to understand surrounding traffic conditions.
MB.DRIVE advanced driver assistance is standard, including Steering Assist, Lane Change Assist, and Distance Assist DISTRONIC. Digital Extra: Evasive Steering Function Plus can automatically steer around objects when the system detects a collision risk. Digital Extra: Proactive Lane Change Assist offers automated lane changes during highway driving.
MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST is also standard, detecting parking spaces on both sides of the vehicle. The Digital Extra: Reverse manoeuvring function enables the vehicle to automatically reverse part of the route most recently driven.
Design Updates That Sharpen the Presence
The 2027 model sharpens its coupe-like silhouette with new hood powerdomes, a revised front end, and a star-pattern daytime running light signature.
The illuminated Mercedes-Benz standing star on the hood is standard. The grille features a black panel with wide chrome slats and a backlit, animated star pattern.
With the optional AMG Line, the EQS receives a more dynamic grille with a unique backlit star pattern, plus a high-gloss, fully illuminated central Mercedes-Benz star and striking outer air intakes.
At the rear, the light strip is enhanced by additional helix elements. The drag coefficient remains 0.20, making the EQS one of the most aerodynamic production cars ever built.
Interior Refinement and Personalisation
The interior introduces new materials including black Natural Grain Poplar Wood trim and the Exclusive Nappa Leather Package. Iconic laurel decorative stitching appears in the door panels.
Seatbelt heating for the front seats provides warmth in cold weather. A HEPA filter cleans incoming air, filtering up to 99.65% of particles.
The optional MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment system features two 13-inch displays with new MBUX remotes for rear passengers.
The MANUFAKTUR program offers extensive personalisation, including two new exterior colours: MANUFAKTUR Black Sparkling and MANUFAKTUR Verde Silver Magno. The newly introduced MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure program offers customers the opportunity to choose from more than 100 paint colours, unique illuminated door sills, numerous steering wheel variants, and emblem packages.
The EQS Reshapes What an Electric Luxury Sedan Can Be
The 2027 EQS is not an incremental update. It's a complete rethinking of what Mercedes-Benz can deliver in an electric flagship. The 925-km WLTP-rated range eliminates the need to plan your life around charging stops. The 800-volt architecture makes fast charging genuinely fast. The steer-by-wire system transforms the driving experience. MB.OS ensures the vehicle stays current and evolves with you.
This is the electric luxury sedan that finally has everything - range, performance, technology, and the refinement Mercedes-Benz has been perfecting for 140 years. Contact Mercedes-Benz Blainville in Mirabel to pre-order or reserve your test drive for when the 2027 EQS arrives later this year.
