5 Ways the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology Continues Its Legendary Legacy

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology marks a new chapter for the iconic G-Class, bringing its legendary capabilities into the electric age. This all-electric version maintains the G-Class's unmistakable design and off-road prowess while introducing advanced electric drive technology. Here are five key features that ensure the electric G-Class will carry on the model's storied legacy:

Advanced Off-Road Capabilities

The electric G-Class takes off-road performance to new heights with its innovative drive system. Four individually controlled electric motors, one near each wheel, provide a combined output of 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque. This setup enables unique functions like G-TURN, which allows the vehicle to rotate on the spot in loose terrain, and G-STEERING, which can significantly reduce the turning circle when off-road.

The electric G-Class retains the hallmark G-Class off-road specs, including the ability to climb 100% grades and ford water up to 850 mm deep - 150 mm more than its combustion engine counterparts. It also features a selectable LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction and virtual differential locks through intelligent torque vectoring, ensuring optimal traction in challenging conditions.

Innovative Electric Drive System

At the heart of the electric G-Class is a 116-kWh lithium-ion battery integrated into the ladder frame. This placement ensures a low centre of gravity and increases the vehicle's rigidity. The battery is housed in a torsion-resistant casing, protecting it from water and dirt during off-road excursions.

The electric drive system accelerates the G 580 from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. It also supports DC fast charging up to 200 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 32 minutes. The recuperation system offers five levels of energy recovery, which drivers can select using the steering wheel paddles.

Iconic Design with Modern Enhancements

The electric G-Class retains the distinctive angular silhouette and design elements that have made the G-Class an icon for over 45 years. However, it incorporates subtle changes to optimize aerodynamics and interior acoustics. These include a slightly raised hood, new A-pillar cladding, a spoiler lip on the roof edge, and flared rear wheel arches with air curtains.

Inside, the electric G-Class combines classic G-Class elements like round air vents and the passenger grab handle with modern features. The MBUX infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch displays comes standard, offering intuitive controls and intelligent voice assistance.

Comprehensive Digital and Safety Features

The electric G-Class comes equipped with a range of advanced digital features to enhance both on- and off-road driving experiences. The new OFFROAD COCKPIT provides a digital overview of relevant off-road information, while the "transparent hood" function uses cameras to display a virtual view under the front of the vehicle, aiding navigation over obstacles.

Safety is paramount, with systems like Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Brake Assist, and Active Lane Keeping Assist standard. The Parking Package with 360-degree camera simplifies manoeuvring in tight spaces, while PRE-SAFE preventive occupant protection prepares the vehicle and its occupants if it detects a potential collision.

Customization and Exclusive Editions

Mercedes-Benz offers extensive customization options for the electric G-Class through its MANUFAKTUR range. This includes exclusive paint colours, interior materials, and design elements, allowing owners to create a truly personalized vehicle.

For its launch year, the electric G-Class will be available in Canada exclusively as the EDITION ONE. This special edition features expanded standard equipment and unique design elements, including distinctive paint options, blue exterior accents, and special interior trim.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology successfully merges the G-Class's rugged heritage with state-of-the-art electric technology. By maintaining its iconic design, enhancing its off-road capabilities, and introducing advanced features, the electric G-Class will continue the model's legacy as the ultimate luxury off-road vehicle for a new era of sustainable mobility.
